Giving to The Work of God
Our lives more or less depend on receiving from others, starting with the gift of life from God. There are two core truths in our 'giving' lives;
1. We cannot give what we don't have; and
2. It is more blessed to give than to receive.
1. We Cannot Give What We Don't Have
"1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him, nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light so that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him." John 1:1-10, NIV.
Jesus Christ is The Light of the world and He came into the world to save those who believe in Him.
"16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil." John 3:16-19, NIV.
God gave His Son so we can receive everlasting life in Him.
2. It Is More Blessed To Give Than to Receive
"32 Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ 36When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed." Acts 20:32-36, NIV.
The challenge for you and me today is to give to God's work in His Church and through His anointed ones and witness the fulfillment of His challenge to us:
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." Malachi 3:10, NIV.
